The short answer: ASTM A193 Grade B7M is quenched-and-tempered chromium-molybdenum alloy-steel bolting with lower minimum strength than B7 through 4 in, a controlled hardness range of 200–235 HBW or 93–99 HRB, and 100% hardness inspection. It is commonly specified where the project requires tighter hardness control, but “B7M” alone does not prove compliance with every sour-service or corrosion standard.[1] [2] [3]

What is ASTM A193 Grade B7M?
B7M uses the same chromium-molybdenum chemistry route as B7 and is also quenched and tempered. The important difference is mechanical control: B7M has lower minimum strength than smaller-diameter B7, a required hardness range of 200–235 HBW or 93–99 HRB, and 100% hardness inspection of the finished fasteners in the lot.[1] [3] [4]
The “M” does not mean metric. It identifies this modified B7 grade and its different mechanical and hardness requirements. A metric B7M order still needs the “M” suffix in the grade designation and separately states metric dimensions.

B7 and B7M are therefore not interchangeable. Supplying B7 against a B7M callout loses the specified hardness control; supplying B7M against a B7 design changes the mechanical-property basis used for the joint.
ASTM A193 B7M strength by diameter
The inch-series B7M minimum mechanical properties use two continuous diameter ranges.[1] [3]

These are material-specification strength minimums and the required hardness range, not allowable design stresses. The governing pressure, piping or equipment code still determines allowable stress at the design temperature. The diameter must be stated because the minimum yield strength changes above 4 in.
Why projects specify controlled hardness
High hardness can increase susceptibility to environmentally assisted cracking in some services. B7M provides a defined 200–235 HBW or 93–99 HRB range and complete hardness inspection, which is why project specifications often pair it with controlled-hardness bolting requirements.[3] [4]
That does not make B7M a universal “sour-service bolt.” Compliance with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, refinery specifications or another environmental standard depends on the full material condition, heat treatment, hardness, environment, manufacturing route and documentation required by that project. Copy the approved grade from the governing specification rather than converting B7 to B7M by assumption.
Hardness testing, marking and certification
For B7M, every fastener in the lot must receive the required hardness inspection. This does not automatically mean that ASTM A193 requires a separately recorded numerical reading for every individual fastener. The material test report or supporting records should identify the applicable edition, grade, heat or lot, heat treatment, mechanical results and evidence of the required 100% hardness inspection; require individually recorded readings only when the project separately specifies them.[1] [2]
The grade symbol and manufacturer identification are required, subject to the standard’s provisions for small products and alternate marking locations. Current A193 editions no longer require a line beneath the B7M grade symbol, although an underlined form is permitted. Do not use the presence or absence of that line as the only acceptance criterion; check the marking and certificate against the ordered edition.
Which nut goes with B7M?
ASTM A194 Grade 2HM is the common heavy hex nut pairing for B7M. Keep the controlled-hardness 2HM callout on the nut as well as B7M on the stud.[4] [5] The compatibility guide covers thread, finish and assembly selection.
Product form, threads and coating
B7M may be supplied as studs, threaded rod or headed fasteners. State that geometry and any coating separately. For inch-series A193 bolting, the normal thread fit is ASME B1.1 Class 2A; the assembly guide explains matching thread series and finishes.[2]
